Shut Up and Suck on Your Pacifier!

I don’t think discrimination means what we think it means.

Take the case of a Jesuit University professor who is facing this: “a “diverse” faculty committee recommended to the university president that McAdams be suspended without pay from April 1 through the fall of 2016 and that he lose his job unless he admits “guilt” and apologized “within the next two weeks.” Wow! This professor must have really committed a crime. So what is this crime that demands not just his suspension but his admission of guilt and an apology? “Your acknowledgement that your November 9, 2014, blog post was reckless and incompatible with the mission and values of Marquette University and you express deep regret for the harm suffered by our former graduate student and instructor, Ms. Abbate.”

Okay, so what “reckless” thing did he say that was “incompatible with the mission and values of Marquette University?” It seems a student defended man and woman marriage that offended junior faculty member Cheryl Abbate who said to the student: “You can have whatever opinions you want but I can tell you right now, in this class homophobic comments, racist comments, and sexist comments will not be tolerated.” And then she told the student he should drop the class.

This is a university, an institution of higher learning, and the class in discussion was a philosophy class titled “Theory of Ethics”.

Okay, so if you know something about me you might know that I have a Bachelor in Philosophy and a Master of Arts degree in Theology and Ethics. So obviously this story caught my attention. Apparently Abbate wrote several issues on the board, including “gay rights”, then said to the class: “everybody agrees on this, and there is no need to discuss it.”  Well, at least one student didn’t find this issue “settled” and did find a need to discuss it and he approached the professor after class to make his point, and they began with a discussion over the issue. One might take it that this student was presenting salient arguments because the professor changed her demeanor and the discussion goes here:

“Abbate explained that “some opinions are not appropriate, such as racist opinions, sexist opinions” and then went on to ask “do you know if anyone in your class is homosexual?” And further “don’t you think it would be offensive to them” if some student raised his hand and challenged gay marriage? The point being, apparently that any gay classmates should not be subjected to hearing any disagreement with their presumed policy views.”

We can easily take from her “some opinions” to mean any opinion she believes goes against “settled” or “unanimous agreement” shouldn’t be offered. But this is a philosophy class and nothing should be so sacrosanct that it can’t be discussed. This quote from Thomas Jefferson is our mantra: “Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear.”

And then she gives the standard knee-jerk liberal response that raising the subject might be offensive to gays. Well, what about raising the subject of gay marriage? Might that not be offensive to traditional believers in marriage. Oh, but that doesn’t count, does it. The one deciding what is offensive is the one in power. She is right that racist, sexist, homophobic statements can be made and they have no part in any honest discussion, but to disagree doesn’t make that disagreement fall into those categories, as she seems to ascribe them.

The next great sin was that Professor John McAdams in his blog defended the student’s right to question this topic and stood against the professor’s reaction to him. For this great crime his termination and apology is being demanded by this great institution of higher learning. Well, what we are discovering is that many of our colleges and universities are less institutions of higher learning and more institutions of propaganda where indoctrination is more preferred than independent learning. Such institutions should decertify themselves as universities and stop appealing to unsuspected future students that they can get a great education at said places. They aren’t, they are becoming hotbeds of insanity where free speech means nothing, free thinking means nothing, where free debate means nothing. One writes the name Trump or Sanders in chalk and students are so traumatized that they have to call the police and cry out that they have been so assaulted that life will never be the same for them. I have no time for these crybabies and why are we giving them a platform? Shut up and suck on your pacifier.
