Censoring access to information hurts us all

You might find an article in The Daily Caller fascinating, though some of you will hyperventilate because it’s written by Ben Shapiro: “Harvard Professor Steven Pinker Points Out How Political Correctness Drives The Alt-Right. The Idiot Left Responds By Using Political Correctness To Rip Him.”

It seems that Harvard psychology professor Steven Pinker in a panel discussion “explained that attempts to quash statements of fact led people to embrace radical interpretations of those facts, leading to political extremism — political correctness, in other words, fueled the fire of the alt-right.” Ben explains what Pinker is saying: “if you refuse to allow people to speak facts, they will think that not only are the facts being censored, the truest explanations are being censored as well.” While he was especially speaking about the alt-right, his message was for any extremist group, including our modern politically driven universities: if you censor information, exclude it from being known, when it is learned this information gets caught up in preconceived beliefs that now distorts factual information. His point was, and again this is for all who censor information, if we get to hear it without censoring it we now have the ability to first run it through critical thinking before it gets trapped in prejudice. In other words, it’s worse to deny information than to put it all on the table.

One of the conclusions Pinker came to on this panel was this:

“Now let’s say that you have never even heard anyone mention these facts. The first time you hear them, you’re apt to say, number one, the truth has been withheld from me by universities, by mainstream media, and, moreover, you will be vindicated when people who voice these truths are suppressed, shouted down, assaulted, all the more reason to believe that the Left, that the mainstream media, that universities can’t handle the truth. So, you get vindicated over and over again, but, worst of all, you’re never exposed to the ways of putting these facts into context . . . So, the politically correct Left is doing itself an enormous disservice when it renders certain topics undiscussable, especially when the facts are clearly behind them because they leave people defenseless the first time they hear them against the most extreme and indefensible conclusions possible. If they were exposed, then the rationale for putting them into proper political and moral context could also be articulated, and I don’t think you would have quite the extreme backlash.”

While Pinker was not arguing for the First Amendment it certainly becomes one. Radicals, both right and left, do a disservice to themselves and to us all by denying all information from being heard and examined. The nature of radicalism is fear and denial. They fear access to all information might show their ideology to be flawed so to protect themselves by denying access to all information not validated by them, that which doesn’t clearly support them.

It’s what we call political correctness. We can’t think for ourselves because to do that we must have access to all information. The media has become complicit in this by not covering stories that tell all the stories so by limiting information we could use to make reasonable conclusions we continue in our extremism.

While he was mostly speaking about the alt-right the alt-left viciously attacked him proving his point. This full story can be found HERE.
